What do the courses in design and technologies entail?

"I enjoyed cooking this year because we tried new foods and got to make them. I enjoyed making them with my friends. It was nice learning about all the healthy foods that are in these recipes"

WHAT DO THE COURSES IN Home Economics ENTAIL?

Design
In this course, students are equipped with the knowledge and skills to be able to follow the design process, analyse problems and design innovative strategies through projects. With a focus on drawing and CAD skills, students are given the opportunity to use the latest technology, including 3D printers, a laser cutter and industry standard design software. The skills and knowledge gained will provide a solid foundation for all of the Design and Technology courses.
Metals
This course involves designing and creating projects using predominantly metal and other materials such as plastic and wood. Students will have the opportunity to design their projects using Google Sketch Up and produce them using a wide range of hand tools, power tools and machinery. This course is advised for students wishing to complete the Material Design and Technology Metal course in Years 11 and 12.
Wood

Students will have the opportunity to design their projects using Google Sketch Up and produce them using a wide range of hand tools, power tools and machinery. Students will continue to learn Occupational Health & Safety requirements in an industrial environment.

Information Computer Technology is imbedded in this course giving students opportunities to develop some basic competencies in computer technologies.

What does the digital technologies course entail?

Digital Technologies
Coding is a serious business! Our reliance on digital products and programs is growing and evolving. This area is one that is dynamic, exciting and challenging, requiring the designer to problem solve and think critically and creatively. This course for those that enjoy the challenge of coding to create programs, games and engineer solutions to real life problems. Building on knowledge from the year 9 course, you will use more advanced programming software whilst being provided the opportunity to take your designs off the computer and into real life. Creative electronics is an exciting and ever evolving program, designed to inspire the next generation of designers.
Food Specialisation
In Year 10 Food Specialisation, students explore various food preservation methods such as drying, pickling, and fermenting, while considering nutrition principles, consumer and cultural values, and the characteristics of ingredients. They develop practical skills in advanced cooking techniques, safe food handling, recipe planning and modification, and evaluating food products. This course encourages students to think creatively and critically about food design and preparation, helping them create specialised food products that meet health, sustainability, and consumer needs.
Childcare
The Year 10 Child Care course is an excellent foundation for students interested in pursuing the Children, Family and Community General course in Years 11 and 12, leading to careers in childcare, nursing, teaching, sociology, psychology, and related fields. This course introduces students to the growth and development of children, as well as the important relationships between families and their communities. Students study topics such as prenatal development, physical and emotional growth, childcare services, nutrition, family dynamics, and the role of play in development. While primarily theoretical, the course includes practical activities where students prepare meals suitable for young children and create toys and activities that support development. A unique feature of the course is the ‘Real-Care’ virtual baby program, which gives students hands-on experience by caring for a simulated infant over a 24-hour period, helping them develop empathy and a deeper understanding of child development.
