Year 7
Humanities and Social Science

"Learning about Aboriginal Australians and their ties to Country in HASS this year was really interesting. It allowed me to develop an understanding of other cultures."

What does the course entail?

The Humanities learning area has four distinct disciplines that have been developed from the Australian Curriculum. Students are introduced to these contexts over the course of the middle years of school. History and Geography are completed each year as stand alone units. Embedded in these units are aspects of Economics and Business, and Civics and Citizenship. The latter two disciplines are more prominent in Year 9 and 10 courses.
During the middle school years, a particular emphasis is placed on the development of existing skills as well as the introduction and development of new skills that will assist the students with their learning in the years to come.

Humanities and Social Sciences consists of four inter-related disciplines: Civics and Citizenship, Economics and Business, Geography and History.

Concepts covered will include:
  • The ancient world and the development of key ideas such as democracy.
  • The scarcity of water and its impact on Australia.
  • The reasons why people live in the places that they live.
  • Work, getting and utilising an income, producing and consuming.
  • Development of the Australian constitution.
  • Roles and responsibilities in Australian parliaments and governments.

The courses are designed to not only develop skills associated with Humanities, but also to help improve the literacy and numeracy skills of the cohort.
