Year 7
Mathematics

"My teacher takes the time to find out how I learn. This has made a difficult subject a lot easier and I am now getting good grades."

What does the course entail?

The Year 7 Mathematics course at Kolbe Catholic College is designed to build on the numeracy skills developed in primary school and support students as they transition to secondary learning.

The course develops students’ mathematical understanding through the proficiency strands of Understanding, Fluency, Problem-solving and Reasoning. Students are encouraged to explore Mathematics in real-world contexts, think critically and creatively, and apply the complete modelling process to solve problems and interpret the world around them.

Throughout the year, students extend their number skills, develop algebraic thinking, and apply geometric reasoning. They explore measurement, probability and statistics, learning to model and interpret real-world situations using formal mathematical language and techniques.

Learning is supported through a repertoire of strategies including explicit instruction, targeted tasks, collaborative activities and investigations. Assessment includes both tests and investigative tasks, with a focus on helping students to become confident and capable mathematical thinkers.

Targeted support is provided for students working below the expected level to ensure their learning needs are met and to build a strong foundation for future success in Mathematics.

From Years 8 to 10, students follow differentiated learning pathways in Mathematics to better cater for individual strengths and needs. At the end of Year 7, students are placed into one of four pathways in Year 8 Mathematics, based on their demonstrated mathematical understanding and achievement. These pathways continue to provide appropriate challenge and support as students progress through the middle years of schooling.
