Year 8
Mathematics

"The Have Sum Fun competition was a great social event and learning experience where two separate year groups got to collaborate and have fun together"

What does the course entail?

The Year 8 Mathematics courses at Kolbe Catholic College build on the learning of Year 7 and support students in developing a broader and more comprehensive understanding of how Mathematics connects to their lives and the world around them. At this stage of adolescence, students are encouraged to question, explore and apply Mathematics through real-world contexts.

Students continue to develop their mathematical understanding through the proficiency strands of Understanding, Fluency, Problem-solving and Reasoning. The modelling process is central to learning, as students select and use mathematical content to pose questions, formulate models, interpret results and communicate findings. This approach helps them develop a deeper understanding of the complexity of the natural environment, society and technology.

Throughout the year, students broaden their number and algebra skills, develop their understanding of geometric relationships, and apply formulas in measurement. They explore key concepts in probability and statistics, including data interpretation, simulations and chance events.
To better cater for individual learning needs, students in Year 8 Mathematics are placed into one of four pathways, according to their demonstrated ability from Year 7:
Pathway 1 provides targeted support for students working below the expected level, with smaller class sizes to foster growth.
Pathway 2C focuses on developing students towards achieving the standard for a C grade in the Year 8 curriculum, building confidence and consistency in core mathematical skills.
Pathway 2 delivers the full Year 8 curriculum for the majority of students.
Pathway 3 extends beyond the Year 8 curriculum, providing challenge for students demonstrating higher mathematical ability.

Learning is supported through a repertoire of strategies including explicit instruction, targeted tasks, collaborative activities and investigations. Assessment includes tests and investigative tasks, with a focus on developing confident, capable and independent mathematical thinkers.
