Literacy Intervention aims to provide targeted intervention for students identified as being behind their chronological age in reading, writing and/or spelling. Students are tested using standardised tests including the Progressive Achievement Test in Reading, South Australian Spelling Test and the Burt Word Recognition Test. Students are classified as either Wave 1 or Wave 2 depending on the level of intervention required.
LITERACY INTERVENTION WAVE 1
These students attend Literacy Classes during Languages. They are assigned a PLD Phonic Spelling Stage and have access to a list of 10 colour coded words each week. These students are given time to learn their words during Literacy classes. The students are also assigned readers through RazKids and receive 1 to 1 fluency practice sessions with the educational assistants. They also complete comprehension activities in these sessions.
LITERACY INTERVENTION WAVE 2
These students are offered programs under the direction of their English teacher. They are assigned a PLD Spelling Stage and have access to a list of 10 words each week. The students may be assigned readers through RazKids and receive 1 to 1 fluency practice sessions with the educational assistants. Some students need only to improve their reading comprehension and have Comprehension Strategy Instruction sessions with an educational assistant.
LITERACY INTERVENTION 'THE ZONE'
The purpose of the intervention in the Zone is to improve literacy skills of students who have been identified as having literacy difficulties in the past and no longer receive support through Languages Withdrawal or English Focus classes. The sessions are no more than ten minutes and are offered before and after school on selected days. Students receive intervention in the areas of spelling, fluency and comprehension.
